  1. Over the last 30 years Frank Gehry has become the biggest “starchitect” of his generation. He uses unconventional designs to awe is fans and critics and create spaces once conceived as impossible. Gehry has used computers and digital media to develop his eccentric designs and bring them to life.
Frank Gehry uses the computer to allow him to explore his conceptual ideas with greater variation. On the Walt Disney Concert Hall, in Los Angeles, California, Gehry used computer modeling to determine the significant angles of the exterior walls so they relate to the surrounding buildings, especially the iconic Chandler Building. He also uses the computer to translate his sometimes-illegible sketches to his would-be clients.
Frank Gehry, as a postmodern architect, has rejected many of the standard design practices the most of his peers adhere to. He begins the design process with deeply conceptual sketches to express his ideas onto paper. He then uses his background in sculpting, to help him further his design ideas by creating paper models that can easily be manipulated at his artistic request. After he sufficiently understands the form of his building, he moves to the computer. Here he creates construction documents and digital renderings. Gehry also uses Computer-Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application (CATIA) to help him remain under budget on his projects.
Digital development and design remains an integral portion of Frank Gehry’s architectural practice. Without computers many of his greatest architectural ideas would have never come into fruition. Computers have no doubt expanded the possibilities of Gehry’s work.
